Shepherds Abiding - Jan Karon

Shepherds Abiding
By: Jan Karon
Published: 2003
Audiobook Read by: John McDonough
My rating: Wonderful

I was looking through the audiobooks on the shelf at the library, trying to find an author for each letter of the alphabet. There weren't very many Ks but I thought I'd give this one a try. I'm so glad I did!! :)

Father Tim has a surprise for Cynthia. It is supposed to be a secret project but it seems that in Mitford, one can't expect anything to remain a secret! As Christmas approaches, more and more people seem to know what is going on! But Father Tim isn't the only one with surprising things coming their way. It seems that Christmas holds many surprises this year in Mitford! As the weeks progress closer and closer to Christmas, everyone has something to be thankful for! When the blessed day finally arrives, there are a lot more gifts received than just the ones wrapped in pretty paper and placed under the trees.

This was a wonderful heart warming story of joy and happiness! Mitford is just the kind of town we all dream about living in where everyone cares about their neighbors and nobody is left behind. This was also a very humorous book! Many times throughout the book I found myself laughing out loud! Some parts I had to go back and listen to again so I could enjoy the laugh even more! The flow of the story was so pleasant and easy to follow and the characters were all likable and fun to get to know!

I listened to the audiobook read by John McDonough and thought he was wonderful, despite my wife saying he shouldn't try to do young girls' voices! :) He really did bring the story to life for me!

Overall, this is a great book and since this is the eighth volume in the Mitford Years series, I am getting the first one so I can go back to the beginning and get to know everyone even better! If you would like a great feel good story, this is a perfect choice!

  1. I have read most of these books. They do small towns proud. Also have great quotes, not all of them from famous people.

  3. Nancy, I wish I could find a small town like this! I guess we'll probably find them in Heaven! :)

It was a wonderful book, Jane! This and M.C. Beaton's A Highland Christmas were wonderful Christmas stories! If I don't end up finding other Christmas stories like these next year, I won't hesitate to listen to them again! :)
