Roof - Phase Two

So, now it's time to get rid of the unsightly flat roof over my garage!

I don't like flat roofs because they are the most likely type of roof to leak and they just don't look right on a house! So, when I decided to re-roof the house I figured I might as well frame in the garage roof so it matched the rest of the house.

I started out by building trusses to match the existing roof. I could have bought pre-made trusses but it would have cost about three times as much and been really hard to get a perfect match so I decided to build them myself.

Then it was just a matter of putting the plywood on and closing up the end and presto! a new look for my garage!

This was the most fun of the whole roofing process and was also the least exhausting! I have always enjoyed framing but I hate roofing with a passion! :)

Now, you guessed it, I have a time lapse video of this process. Unfortunately, the batteries in my camera went dead and I managed to miss a couple of pretty good chunks but it is still fun to watch! :)

So now all that's left is getting the rest of the shingles done!

  1. Wow Andy, look at you go! You do some amazing work there, if you were near me I'd hire you to do the work I need done, especially at that speed! lol Lookin' awesome! Have a fantastic day!

  2. Thanks Darlene! :) Just call me "Super Handy Andy"! :)
I WISH I could move that fast! Imagine the things we could get done if we had that ability! :) Honestly though, I have found that I have slowed down a lot since I quit doing this kind of work full time. I've been working at the hotel for nine years now and when I do a project like this I can tell I'm out of practice!

  3. You are super awesome. I don't think most of the guys I know can even change a flat tire, let alone build an entire roof!

  4. Well, now I'm just going to get a big head! :) But thank you anyway! The thing is, the guys you know can probably do other things that I wouldn't have a clue how to do. At least I hope they can! But like you say, I'm super awesome so I can do pretty much anything! :) Right?

  5. That framing is a thing of beauty to behold. Nice job. I'm curious how you did your videos. Where were you filming from and who filmed it? Did the camera just sit there while you did all of that work? Sorry, but videos are something I'm not that famniliar with.

  6. Thank you Nancy! I have a special camera that takes a snapshot at certain intervals that I can program. This particular video was taking three snapshots every minute. I then use Windows Movie Maker to compile them into a video. I mounted the camera up on a telephone pole next to my house! My wife was a bit nervous about me climbing up there! :)

  7. It's a good thing that you've decided to replace your flat roof, Andy. I'm pretty sure your house will look good after the installation is done. What type of shingles would you use? Metal or asphalt?

  8. You did the trusses so well! Although your roof has an uneven angle, I can see from the work you did that it has the right support in each level. By the way, what shingles did you use for this roof?

    1. Thanks Otis. I hate the way the roof is designed on this house and if it was feasible I would have changed it completely but that was just not an option! I used a 40 year dimensional shingle, CertainTeed brand I believe they were. One of these days I should really post the final pictures and video so people can see the finished product!

  9. I am curious, too, on how it turned out. Great move choosing a 40-year dimensional shingle. With a wind resistance of 80mph, it would stand firm in any type of weather. Some roofers offer an additional algae resistance warranty for this type of roofing, I believe. Don’t worry about it being asymmetrical because it has an architectural beauty that I see.
